A: Delays in evaluation of articles for African Journal of Business and Economic Research
In October 2023, the indolence and negligence of the company’s Virtual Editorial Assistants covering the journal led to about 154 papers submitted to the journal slipping through the cracks and not being queued for reviews. Though we have since let the VEA go, the backlog of affected articles, some dating from 2022, has meant that some articles have now been in the system for almost a year without a decision reached on them. We sincerely apologise for this lapse and can assure our authors that we have taken steps to ensure that such do not occur again in the future.
Our target is that there should be a decision on articles submitted to our journals within 8-12 weeks. However, given that we depend on the generosity of reviewers, and that for most of our journals each article requires two reviewers (with editors sometimes asking for additional reviews if they are not satisfied with the quality of the reviews received), we have come to realize that this time frame is rather aspirational for some of our journals like AJBER, where the volume of submission is very high. We receive on average five submissions to the journal every day.
B: Our publishing model (journals)
Some people have asked why we charge a publication fee when we are not an open access publishing firm. The simple answer is that we embraced what is called a mixed publishing model. Given that revenue from subscription is rather paltry and will be insufficient to sustain an ambitious publisher without the clout of the industry leaders, we decided to charge a modest publication fee of £150 for some of our journals while some are completely free. Currently we publish 21 journals out of which we charge publican fees on 11. For the journals we charge publication fee, we also make a percentage of the articles published in each issue of the journal available for the authors to publish on such open access platforms as Facebook, Researchgate, Linkin-In etc. We charge £250 for AJBER because of the resource demand of the journal. For instance while we have one Virtual Editorial Assistance to cover 2-3 journals, we have 3 VEAs to cover AJBER alone.
C: DHET accredits additional three of our journals
In its recently released 2024 list, DHET, the South African regulator of higher education, accredited additional three of our journals. These are:
· African Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
· African Journal of Public Administration and Environmental Studies
· African Journal of Law and Justice System
With these the total number of our journals accredited by DHET is now 13.
